சங்க காலத்திலும் வள்ளுவர் காலத்திலும் ’அன்பு’ என்ற சொல், தொடர்புள்ளவர்களிடம் நாம் காட்டும் பாசத்தைக் குறிக்கும் சொல்லாகப் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டது. ’அருள்’ என்ற சொல் தொடர்பில்லாதவர்களிடமும் மற்ற உயிரினங்களிடமும் நாம் காட்டும் பாசத்தைக் குறிக்கும் சொல்லாகப் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டது. அன்பின் இயல்பையும் அதன் சிறப்பையும், அதனால் வரும் பயனையும் அன்புடைமை என்ற அதிகாரத்தில் வள்ளுவர் குறிப்பிடுகிறார். மேலும், அன்பில்லாதவன் உயிரில்லாதவன் என்றும் கூறுகிறார். அருளின் இயல்பையும் அதன் சிறப்பையும் அதனால் வரும் பயனையும் அருளுடைமை என்ற அதிகாரத்தில் வள்ளுவர் குறிப்பிடுகிறார். இந்த சொற்பொழிவில், அன்புடைமை அருளுடைமை ஆகிய அதிகாரங்களில் வள்ளுவர் கூறும் கருத்துக்கள் தொகுத்து வழங்கப்படுகின்றன. Briefief Description During Sangam period and also during Valluvar’s period the Tamil word ’அன்பு’ was used to refer to the love shown to family members and close associates. The Tamil word ‘அருள்’ was used to refer to the affection shown to strangers and the compassion shown to the animals and plants. In the chapter on ‘Love’, Valluvar discusses the nature of love, its significance and the benefits of love. In the chapter on ‘Compassion’ he discusses the nature of compassion, its significance and the benefits of compassion. In this lecture, a summary of Valluvar’s concepts of ‘love’ and ‘Compassion’ is presented.
