A genuine delight, and perfect introduction
I have never read Anne of Green Gables before, though I have had many friends over the years talk about their love of the book and astonishment that I had never read it. When Anne with an E came out, I watched the first season with my mother, which was my first genuine introduction to Anne’s story, beyond the general gist I had gathered. I have been a Patreon of Mary Kate from the start, and so for quite some time now have known about this podcast audiobook she has been working on, but was not at a tier to listen initially, and then my (finally newly diagnosed) ADHD made it hard to remember to check out the episodes as they were released. But it’s been on my “want to do” list for quite some time. Once she began releasing them on Apple podcasts (and Spotify), it has been much easier for me to pop it on when I’m on a longer car trip, which I have started doing as I drive back and forth the hour + drive to my girlfriend’s place. And what an absolute, genuine delight it has been. I was worried that after years of hearing people talk about AOGG that I wouldn’t like it as much as it was built up to me, and I suspect that if I was not listening to Mary Kate’s rendition I may not love it as genuinely as I do. I find myself time and again laughing out loud and then quickly move to tears sometimes just by my genuine fondness for Anne. Mary Kate’s rendition of her long winded monologues are perfection, and make me think of all the times I would sit talking the ear off of one or both of my parents in the same way. The addition of so many other excellent voice actors, and the background music selection all comes together to create what I genuinely feel to be the most perfect introduction to Anne’s books that I could hope for. I don’t think I would be laughing and crying and laughing again as much if I was reading the book traditionally or listening to another audiobook, though to be fair I can’t compare since this is the only way I’ve read the story. But I’m so glad it is. Anne is so dear to me now, and I can’t wait to experience more of her story as I continue through the series. It feels genuinely the perfect series in the perfect way at the perfect time for me. As someone who is newly diagnosed with ADHD, newly realized queer in a relationship with a social worker who has a heart for foster care and plans to eventually foster together, and both people who are both trained in trauma and have lived through trauma, Anne story hits notes for me that I know they wouldn’t have if I had read it at any other time. I love when you finally get around to reading something you’ve put off for years and realize it’s the perfect time to read it. And I couldn’t be happier that this perfect timing is also coming from the voice and creative mind and dedicated work of my dear friend Mary Kate.
