“I was fortunate enough to see the first two operas discussed on this podcast, courtesy of the Met in HD broadcasts. Both of the singers interviewed so far are among my favorites. I’m also a big fan of Rhiannon Giddens, an eclectic and very talented singer. I’d give the podcast 3-½ if I could. To be generous, I pushed it up to four stars, because it’s worth listening to especially if you’re opera-curious. But in her attempt to be socially relevant (or something) and to make opera more interesting to people who think they hate opera, Giddens is sinking this podcast with a big stone. Do I care about the romantic struggles of a former prostitute? No. Do I need a brain scientist to describe the physiology of falling in love. No. These individuals detract and deflect from the topic at hand. In this particular context, THEY ARE NOT INTERESTING. I DON’T CARE ABOUT THEM. I have a feeling, however, that this is the format Giddens has settled upon, so we’re going to hear a lot more of these so-called experts. Sad. Historical context? Great. Musicology? Fantastic. The thoughts and performances of the singers? Marvelous! The gorgeous lily of opera is intrinsically gilded. It needs nothing more.”
