If someone could just get Dax to shut up…
Hearing from the guests is great. They are consistently funny, entertaining, and interesting. But we don’t get to hear nearly as much from them as would be ideal because Dax does way, way, way too much talking. And when Dax is talking it is almost always about Dax. The guest will start to tell some entertaining anecdote and Dax interrupts because yes — once again — the anecdote reminds Dax something about Dax. The format of the podcast has 20 minutes or longer after the guest departs of more Dax talking about Dax. This is aided by his sycophantic co-host Monica who occasionally gets to interject something into the Dax soliloquy to tell us something else about Dax. One guest did finally get him to stop his blathering: Bill Gates. Bill was quite skilled at recognizing the problem, and each time Dax was about to run off on another garrulous tangent about Dax, he would shut it down and return the discussion to the topic at hand. Gates clearly doesn’t suffer fools gladly, and he refreshingly (for this podcast), didn’t suffer Dax. Listening to the two Bill Gates episodes made me realize how insufferably boring it is listening to Dax narrate the meaningless minutiae of his life.
