Alex Singleton: making art vs family life
Listen now
Description
Sally and Carole chat with Oxford-based mural artist Alex Singleton. The focus? How can artists make art while managing the intensity of family life. Find out on this episode of Art Musings. And THANK YOU for being here. Means the world. ❤️   About guest artist Alex Singleton: https://www.instagram.com/asbirdmanmurals/ https://www.asbirdman.net/ "I’m Alex Singleton, originally I studied Graphics and illustration at Saint martins. I spent four years working in studios in Sydney and developing my art work. Returning to Britain I trained as a teacher and focused on how I could make learning more enjoyable experience for others. Around this time I got my paintings displayed at the Royal academy summer show and sold further paintings. Ten years ago I lived in Bristol for a year and rented a cheap studio in an old police station. I curated an exhibition with a group of young artists from Malta. Six years ago I won sn internship to train in Letterpress printing in Nashville at Hatch show print. And returning to Britain started making cards and getting runs of my work printed at Richard Lawrence’s studio in east oxford. In the last seven years I have created murals around Oxfordshire . Breaking away from oil paintings and illustrative work, I have put my hands to letterpress printing, ceramics and selling cards at markets. I decided I wanted a more external dialogue with art and people. Working with other street artists has opened up creative worlds I never expected. Travelling to street art festivals and joining a graffiti crew has made me aware of how much work goes into forming identity as an artist." I was born in Canada, moved to the UK in 1995, and settled in East Oxford in 2005. I’ve been painting watercolours since 2019, and play with inks occasionally. I am currently focused on honing my skills, strengthening my ties with Oxford’s art community, and getting on the socials (eeek!). I am also a professional podcaster, writing, hosting and producing Smashing Security, a lighter take on technological SNAFUs, and Sticky Pickles: what do you do now? About Sally Anne Stewart: https://www.sallyannestewartprints.co.uk https://www.instagram.com/print_sal/ I'm a self-taught printmaker who lives and works in East Oxford. I became a full-time artist at the start of 2020, following nearly two decades in journalism and communications. I work chiefly in linocut, creating unique, limited-edition prints. I'm inspired by nature, but also by the urban environment, and my work is printed by hand in my studio at the bottom of my garden. I enjoy the bold look of single-colour linocuts, but also the challenge and effect of multi-colour, multi-block prints, even if I end up with a fresh batch of grey hairs with each one I tackle!
