“My name is Adam and I am an approval addict. For as far as I can remember I was told that how I behaved was wrong. I suffer from ADHD and at the age of 38 recently also discovered I am most likely dyslexic. While these are not excuses they are, to a degree, how I have been able to maintain my dependency on approval. Constantly telling myself that I am broken and placing the blame on these disorders.
You’re episode on approval addiction meant a great deal to me. I have, since I can remember, sought approval of others as a means of validation for myself. I am self-destructive and self deprecating and while, objectively, I would be considered successful my life still feels empty without those around me, patting me on the back.
Thank you for shedding light on this topic and opening my eyes to myself.
