“I’ve been an official prison visitor for some years, having gained an initial interest as a mentor for someone who used to work for me and who had landed himself in serious trouble. It has been the most fulfilling voluntary work that I have done since retiring, having met the whole range of society inside.
I have been binge listening to both series of these outstanding podcasts and can only hope that they become recommended listening for all those involved in our judicial system, particularly our politicians. You have nailed so many of the failures in the system, many of which could so easily be put right with minimal effort and huge potential cost savings to Society.
Four ideas for future guests:
An ex-guest of HMP Grendon Underwood - the therapeutic prison with an enviable recidivism rate.
A Governor - to talk about the element of risk. (Unlikely to find one!) perhaps an ex-Governor?
A chaplain - to talk about prison welfare, rehab agencies and the reality of what is on offer inside rather than the theory.
Neil (Razor) Smith - a brilliant speaker on all aspects of life, inside and out. Also an excellent author.
I’ve discovered people are really interested in prison life; these podcasts can only be of huge benefit in raising the issues away from the Daily Mail/Mirror/Sun approach and put pressure on politicians to make radical changes.
Keep up the good work
John”
