“I’m already a big fan of the History Hit network podcasts, specifically Gone Medieval and The Ancients, so I was very happy when they introduced this one. Those two are darn near perfect. This one is very good, but with one big problem.
First, I adore Kate as a host. She has a very pleasant voice, and I love the fact that each episode feels like you’re just listening in on a friendly conversation. Her podcasts never seem scripted or stiff, and her questions and commentary are both insightful and funny. The topics are really interesting, and I like how different they all are. Each episode is fairly short introduction to an overlooked or not-widely-discussed topic - this is how I see it anyway. It’s a podcast, not a university class - but there’s enough here to get you started if you wanted to dive deeper and do more research on your own.
However, as others have mentioned, the sound quality isn’t the best. I’m not sure why, as many of the other HH network podcasts have very good sound quality, but this one is much “quieter” than almost any other podcast I listen to. It’s NOT that Kate is speaking quietly, it just seems like the volume on the whole thing has been dialed way down. I have to turn the volume way up on this one, then back down when my player shuffles to the next podcast in my queue.
I sincerely hope HH continues producing this podcast, but HH folks, if you’re reading this, please improve the sound quality!”
