The Week in Markets - S&P 500 index makes a new all-time high, more than two years after the previous one
Listen now
Description
In rising 1.2% on Friday last week, the S&P 500 index went to a new high. In the 14 previous times since 1950 when the index went to a new high after a year or more months without one, it was up a year later in all but one, and the average return in all 14 times was 15%. Past presidential election cycles show the market tends to do well both 6 months before and after elections, regardless of the ideology of the winner. This episode is presented by Mark Matthews, Head of Research Asia Pacific.
