“So far I’ve only listened to, at the time of writing this, the most recent episode (A Bunch of Reasons Christianity is True, IIRC), but it was a long episode and I’m going to hazard a guess that it’s indicative of the show at large (I will listen some more and update here if it turns out otherwise).
I’ve sat through a lot of this type of content in church services and Bible studies, and I understand that this type of thing is usually very well intentioned. And preaching to the choir isn’t always a bad thing.
But here, and in my experience with this type of content in general, it tends to suffer from the same thing that MSNBC and Fox News and other information silos suffer from: all arguments tend to sound good in isolation, when delivered to people already inclined to agree with you and who lack an in depth, critical understanding of the subject matter. In my view, this does a disservice and results in worse outcomes, not better, resulting in more harm than good, even if there may be some exceptions.
People raised in this kind of environment tend to end up thinking how patently clear it is that their side is right, and puzzled (at best) as to how anyone on the other side could possibly disagree. Nuance is avoided, unless it suits their own side. Critical thinking is ostensibly encouraged, but not actually practiced. Concessions are never made. Examples are included when they fit the narrative; counter examples are avoided. Criticisms and views from the other side are rarely anything more than straw men, gussied up and trotted out to stare at in incredulity, or to demonstrate how to find the weak points when taking aim.
It may be well intentioned, but it’s intellectually dishonest and damaging to everyone involved.
I hope I’m wrong. Mike sounds like a nice guy. A great many Christians are. I just wish there’d be more intellectual depth and honesty, and more critical inward reflection. More sincere engagement with the other side, and more honest reckoning with the unknown and unknowable where their own side is concerned.”
