Big Ideas consistently lives up to its title
We know the risks of eating junk food to our wellbeing and productivity; “garbage in, garbage out.” I’m not sure we’re quite as aware of the consequence for our minds on the quality of ideas we absorb, the post modern belief that words tweeted by Kim Kardashian are equivalent to words formulated by any prominent intellectual. Perhaps the unmitigated disaster of Donald Trump’s presidency demonstrates what happens when a society is starved of robust intellectual enquiry. Of course it’s more complicated than the availability of ideas and informed conversations. However, Big Ideas contributes to my understanding of self, others, society, politics, economics, philosophy, science, culture, environment.....which allows me to think critically and participate in Australian society from a place of reduced ignorance. Thank you to everyone at the ABC involved in this enlightening series! Just as we’ve had health advice to be active for 30 minutes a day or to quit smoking, perhaps we need a similar campaign for our minds, because ignorance is obviously a social hazard!

Whenever I listen to one of these talks, which is usually by chance in the wee small hours because I can’t sleep, I get riveted to the unfolding rich discussion. No sleep but I love mulling over the ideas the next day. Truly great radio.
