Bingeworthy in its own rite
I must’ve listened to every episode 4 times by now. It never gets old. Casual but incisive media criticism with gems of conversational comedy sprinkled in every episode. Hearing Lon’s thoughts on anything is a real treat — he’s well-educated and eloquent but keeps it snappy and funny. His experience in the entertainment industry has him dropping frequent nuggets of intel about its inner workings. His approach to media and entertainment criticism is so well and passionately developed. He’s a man with a lot to say and he knows how to put it in the most compelling, engaging terms possible. Occasionally that passion spills over when he grills Hal over his opinions (Banshees of Inisherin) but better too much than too little. Lon was born to do this. The impish Hal is a perfect counter to Lon! While they’re similar enough people that you truly feel like you’re listening to a couple of homies shoot the breeze, their identities and perspectives often diverge, making for rich discussion. Hal brings chaos and surreality to the show that keeps one on edge and provides occasional relief to Lon’s pedagogic disposition. But he can also switch modes on a dime; the bits always end right exactly when they should and not a second later. Lon and Hal — if you see this, please keep this show up! And as much as you goof about what’s “behind the paywall,” consider erecting one! I’d support it.

They’re not taking anything too seriously or too flippantly. It feels like honest takes on...Read full review »
