‘Beyond reasonable doubt’ is beyond van Beynen
I don’t have an opinion about DB’s guilt or innocence but it is clear to me that van Beynen does not understand what “beyond reasonable doubt” means. He thinks his opinion is “reasonable” and everything else is not, dismissing any evidence not supporting his view. He rudely dismisses the conclusions of a senior judge who’s reviewed all the evidence and has more experience than him. I stopped listening halfway through his episode dedicated to why he thinks the senior judge is an idiot and why his view is the only rational one. He’s not doing anyone any favours refusing to make reasonable concessions. Forming the opinion that DB is guilty and conceding the case isn’t straightforward are not mutually exclusive. Holding an unshakable position that the case is perfect is just bad form.

The narrators bias is very apparent. However it was very well produced and I could not stop listening. Easy way to understand the disturbing complexities of this notorious case. I hope NZ produces other great quality crime/storytelling podcasts like this.
