“As a huge fan of How Did This Get Made, I am obviously pre-disposed to love podcasts that pick apart films (the good, the bad and the ugly), and as a woman of color I am all about exploring ideas related to race and intersectionality. These guys are funny and genuine — you feel like you are just hanging out with friends kicking it on a lazy Sunday afternoon— as they rate all films on how they help “the cause” (the cause being a wider role/range for black male leads in hollywood). And I learned some interesting fun facts along the way (like Sylvester Stalone was originally cast to lead Beverly Hills Cop— say whaaaat?). But at times they lack of historical or even sociological perspective. For example, there is a segment called “The Swirl” where one of the young men ponders how there can be an inter-racial romance inserted in every film, with white women valued as the platonic ideal. I get how its supposed to be “funny” but it ends up being a little offensive and alienating to women of color (sorry guys, just real talk, i adore you so i guess this only applies to one of you). what also bothers me about the swirl is that its fundamental gripe re: black male sexuality is so off base, for too long black men have been depicted as overly sexual or only sexual and thats it (i.e. not 3 dimensional people). Anyway, my issues with “the swirl” aside, it’s really a fun podcast and worth checking out! I can’t wait for them to do more.”
