Utterly Inane Podcast with No Rhyme or Reason
Blood Ties features racist stereotypes, unlikable protagonists, and shameful exploitation of #metoo as a plot point. The main drama comes from dull person vs. person conflicts with the hackneyed trope of bad, rich, white, and powerful people vs. a good, rich, white woman. I’ve witnessed better writing and more entertaining plot points on soap operas. I’m supposed to believe Eleanore is willing to risk her livelihood and her family’s reputation (as if!) to “help” victims who don’t even want her help. She is fundamentally a character with a chaotic good alignment and a god complex - a “holy fool” who doesn’t care who she hurts and manipulates as long as she achieves her ideas of the greater good. For instance, Eleanore uses a mother’s son against her to pressure the woman into telling her sexual assault story publicly. This survivor didn’t want to be involved anymore but is effectively forced into going along with Eleanore’s plan. This is portrayed as supportive and empowering. And Eleanore is supposed to be the hero I’m rooting for! The rich siblings are both awful people completely detached from how normal people live. I didn’t believe for a second there would be any serious consequences for the siblings’ misdeeds. Spoilers, there really weren’t! At the end of season two, Michael is tentatively reunited with his wife and son despite his horrible and selfish behavior. Eleanore somehow becomes CEO of the family business by a unanimous board vote with no leadership or business experience. Her first public action as CEO is to lie about her father to the investigative reporter she’s been giving information to throughout the series. It turns out she isn’t actually willing to face consequences and will participate in coverups like the rest of her rich acquaintances. I guess in the end, her behavior is more realistic than her initial dedication to finding “the truth” about her father. This podcast is pointless, poorly written, and downright offensive in its portrayal of victims of sexual assault, people of color, and foreign countries. The fact the writers couldn’t even bother to name “the island” is proof they don’t care about the world they’re supposed to be building. One-dimensional and racist stereotypes of black people acting as servants for white people in the Caribbean are only par for the course in this podcast. The voice acting is also dreadful and awkward. Personally, I’m sick of famous screen actors getting voice parts and leaving better qualified professional voice actors without a job opportunity. I wasted a few hours of my life I can never get back. I HATE HATE HATE this podcast. I’d give it zero stars if I could.
