“I taught art at Fremont HS in the 90s. I’ve been at South Gate HS since 2000. This is fine storytelling, leaving me misty eyed, remembering Sike, LA’s most prolific writer, the title song and it’s bouncy fun imagery. But the Post Office stickers!! They were all over the halls at Fremont! Back then, I could occasionally earn the trust of a tagger, and they would kill it in the class. I also remember the anguished conversations about Juvie and kids in the system, and kids shot in the streets. Thank you for this beautiful local history of a time and place and people who have been exploited and misunderstood. Graffiti/tagging/writing is the great vernacular art of LA.
