Maternal instinct in men/male identifying
I love this podcast. I often listen as I am going to sleep because it is so laidback, there is so much love and warmth in it, it makes me feel cosy. Msg for the team: listening to your ep with Quincey I thought if a doco on Netflix called babies. In the first episode they looked at a study about physiological responses in new parents. They said, there is this particular group of hormones that can be thought of as the nurturing, protective maternal chemicals, that is generated when mothers give birth and are bonding with their newborns, and at the same time, there is a specific part of the brain that becomes active. They tested men in heterosexual partnerships who had just become new dads, and they found that the hormones were not activated and the region of the brain was not activated. But then, they tested the same thing in gay men new parents, and found that the hormones and brain region were activated in gay men new dads. So they suggest the ‘maternal instinct’ is highly dependent on the role the new parent believes themselves to be playing, or assigns themselves. Interesting, huh?!
