“I was so excited when I heard that David Plotz—a funny, clever, and thought-provoking journalist—was launching City Cast. I was even more thrilled when I heard that the venture would open its doors in Chicago before any other city.
I’ve since been disappointed by both the style and the substance. Jacoby Cochran comes across as someone who, as a college professor, is used to a (literally) captive audience. His dramatic pauses and theatrical intonations are better suited for poetry nights than a daily local news podcast.
Since launch, the show has often focused on pandemic-related lockdowns and to what extent people are following them. The tone of these segments is joyless, scolding, and wearisome. A year into the pandemic, City Cast’s coverage shames some college-aged women for going out on St Patrick’s day and chastises Lori Lightfoot for reopening outdoor dining. City Cast seems to support absolutist bans rather than discuss how reopening can be done more safely. If the topic were sex ed, City Cast would be my evangelical aunt—decrying joy as debaucher, advocating abstinence, and refusing to discuss birth control.
I will continue listening to the podcast, because I am so hungry for a show exactly in this format (local, daily, and brief). I hope it might become more interesting and fun.”
