“While much needed attention was given to tempering the divisions in this country, 11/24’s episode sounded more at like 2013 than 2023. While we all could certainly work with and hammer out differences and form warm friendships for the good of all with the Republicans on the show, let’s face it- the show blithely passes on the fascist rhetoric coming from MAGA and Trumpism right now, rhetoric calling for violence and mass detentions and deportations of even American citizens who are not of the ‘right’ ethnic makeup. There is no room to ‘talk it out’ and find things in common with people who support a presidential candidate who is vowing that upon election he will arrest and lock up his perceived political enemies. I’m not sure what the point of the show was, because I for one could not stay in a room with someone who is OK with this. It has nothing to do with different opinions at that point; it becomes a moral and a human rights issue, and the danger that we are on a fast track to losing our rights should MAGA succeed. In the episode this was not mentioned once, so I’m not sure how to feel hopeful about overcoming this madness, one by one. It’s not longer about being apolitical- fascism forces you to become political either by embracing all of nihilistic qualities or by becoming obedient. Still, the effort is certainly appreciated and I will continue to treat people with dignity even when there is vehement disagreement.”
