I'm a Doctor of Chiropractic, and we're doing the show to educate the public on Health and Chiropractic. And today we're going to focus on what the spine does when there's a scoliosis and what happens to your health and how it can affect your health and how important it is to address a scoliosis, especially in the young child. June is the month of scoliosis. And basically this is when most people focus on what a scoliosis is. And back to school is coming up in August, and a lot of their parents are worried about their kids and their health and it's a good time to do a checkup for the kids and check them for spinal problems, especially scoliosis. And today, it's a very common thing that's happening. I don't know why a lot of the kids are coming up with scoliosis in their spine. I guess it's the change in time, it's a change in how the kids are handling their posture and in what we do; we’re sitting at home a lot and we're on the computer a lot. And you know, things are different than what they were 10 years ago, 20 years ago. So what is a scoliosis? A scoliosis is a curvature of the spine sideways. And basically the spine instead of being straight, it looks like an “S”. So imagine an “S” in your back instead of a straight spine. If you look at your pen, it's straight, straight as an arrow. That's how your spine should be. It occurs a lot of times around the growth spur, right before puberty, around 12, 13 years of age is when most people find it. A scoliosis affects the entire skeletal system; and includes the spine, their ribs, the pelvis. It affects the brain, the central nervous system. It affects the hormones, the digestive system. It can deplete the body from nutritional resources, it can affect and damage major organs such as the heart and the lung. And the reason for that is a lot of times when there's a scoliosis, the rib can be distorted, and that can cause pressure on the heart, and squeeze the heart, and squeeze the lung. On one side, we will have more pressure than the other side. So there's different types of scoliosis. There's different categories; there's 3 categories, and there are 7 types of scoliosis. So the 3 categories are idiopathic; idiopathic means, we don't know.
