Dynasties: OK in concept, but...
Decent concept for a series but the execution is off. Take the Rizuttos. We hear several minutes of dialogue and grainy phone calls to make a point that the Don was a respected fixer, and then glide over the fact that he was a key person in the resolution of the Quebec biker wars that claimed hundreds of lives; perhaps a little more about that second thing?! In the Stronachs episode, we have literally no idea what Magna is and instead of learning anything about how Belinda grew the company, we instead hear repeatedly about how she broke up Tie Domi’s marriage (this a tabloid?). And the Irving episode... the story of Kenneth is a sad one, but to make that human interest piece the main focus of a story about the Irvings misses so much about them and the “captured state;” another strange point of emphasis. And there’s little original reportage here (save for the better Sahotas episode that features interviews with non-journalists); these are mostly repackaged stories built on the backs of other journalists that sound like Wikipedia articles with a Freshbooks ad slapped on.

They're not always necessarily wrong, but they don't engage in a critical analysis of their own viewpoints nearly enough, and kind of...Read full review »
