Used to be great, now it feels like the hosts are being pessimistic on purpose.
This podcast used to be on the cutting edge. While politicians and the public failed to take this virus seriously, this podcast was science based and properly relayed information. As we found new developments it helped give a healthy range of worst case to best case scenarios. Unfortunately over the past few weeks it has become pessimistic to the point of being at best inaccurate and at worst purposefully fear mongering. When the first antibody blood sample tests became public, the numbers of infected were much higher, meaning we were closer to herd immunity than we thought and the infection fatality rate could be much lower than anticipated. While this podcast pointed out the fatality rate might be lower, it stated multiple times “The bad news is we are still very far away from herd immunity.” The truth is we are much, much closer to herd immunity than we would have expected, which is good news, yet instead of focusing on that they talk about how this unexpected good news is actually bad news. In yesterday’s episode they discuss how the annual flu deaths reported by the CDC are modeled, not actually counted, as not everyone that dies from the flu gets tested. The podcast host then says that you if you look at just those who died with a positive flu test, the amount of deaths is less than 10,000. He then compared that number to the amount of people who died of coronavirus, saying that is a more “apples to apples” comparison as coronavirus deaths required a positive test. While this virus is much much much worse than the flu, I have a tough time believing the host could be so ignorant as to think this is good faith reporting. Clearly the CDC knows that flu deaths are way undercounted so they need to model to get a correct guess at the actual amount of deaths. And because we are so focused on the coronavirus, while deaths may be undercounted they are very likely not undercounted to nearly the same degree. Taking this “apples to apples” comparison is just fear mongering and has absolutely no value. There are many more examples but it takes so long to properly explain each example, I’m going to stop here. Spreading these negative sentiments with just a hint of truth doesn’t help anyone. I know developments aren’t occurring on a daily basis anymore, but I hope the hosts don’t continue filling air time by revising cdc statists to meet their own needs, or moving the goalposts on any good news.
