“I appreciated the conclusion of the last season, it was satisfying. It is a reminder that there are many manipulators in the world. A simple act of being neighborly can quickly turn into a life or death decision, especially if an elicit relationship develops.
D’Ambra’s connection to her hometown humanizes the first season, it helped me see why it was so important for her to tell that story. One critique: last season’s interviews were full of phrases like “Now, my recollection is…” repeated over and over and over again. I understand her need to truthfully represent interviews with law enforcement officers and that this was a cold case. However, there are ways for her to recap at the end of their conversation instead of some guy saying “Now, if I recall correctly…”, complete with a Southern drawl, about 11 times in a row filling an entire episode.
In this season, the podcaster’s desire to create tension, even fake tension, is so strong it can distract. D’Ambra drives to meet with someone she wishes to interview. She shares “This woman had been out on a bike ride. If I would have arrived just seconds earlier, I may have missed her.” Long pause. Wow, so basically you DROVE UP AT THE SAME MOMENT SHE WAS RETURNING FROM A BIKE RIDE? Unfortunately, unnecessary drama creates doubt when there are episode cliffhangers.
I also spend a great deal of time rewinding to remind myself who she is interviewing. As the listener, you have to do a lot of work. It would be helpful if she would help recall this information in a narrative, or tell the listener something unique about this person, maybe one thing they already know and one thing they don’t to help them stay on track. She tries but I think she gets lost in the story and forgets everyone else is along for the ride.
This season is somewhat frustrating, maybe because it’s so obvious the person incarcerated for the crime was a convenient choice, not the real perpetrator. Hopefully the melodrama will be lessened somewhat (but I doubt it).”
