It was no surprise then when she was cast in the iconic role of Princess Leia in the 1977 film Star Wars, a performance that would define her for the rest of her life. In the decades that followed, she openly battled addiction and mental illness, while simultaneously carving out a unique career path as a writer and “script doctor” before her untimely death in 2016.
