“And when my parent who, like all adults, seemed ludicrously competent, gave me advice and/or asked me to narrate my life, it felt, in my brain, like more opportunities to fail. But my other parent would mostly just stay quiet till I felt like sharing something, and I liked that much better. When I asked a question beyond simple yes or no, the quiet parent would ask, “what do you think about that?” before sharing their answer, which they presented as tentative rather than The Truth. Worked like a charm. Also I loved a series of unfortunate events because the kid characters were portrayed as full humans competent in real-life skills (cooking, etc). Get us sensitive boys some wells! (SNL reference). Appreciate you guys beyond measure.”
