Description
Welcome to another episode of Dialogue over Division. Today, we have the pleasure of hosting Dr. Marco Navarro-Génie, a distinguished academic and public policy expert with an extensive background in political science and history. Dr. Navarro-Génie holds degrees from Concordia University and the University of Calgary, where he earned his PhD. His academic focus spans radical revolutionary movements and cultural and political identity in Latin America.   In this episode, Dr. Navarro-Génie shares his journey from communist Nicaragua and what he learned growing up there, which drives his passion. We delve into his experiences on campus and the challenges he faced for holding his students to a high standard. We also discuss the importance of personal autonomy, his view that being "conservative" is a disposition rather than an ideology, and how this differs from "liberalism." Additionally, we explore the challenges of political partisanship and why it is important to get involved at a grassroots level.   We also speak to the book he co-authored, Canada's Covid: The Story of a Pandemic Moral Panic, which looks at the political and social dimensions of the response to Covid. Dr. Navarro-Génie offers a critical perspective on the moral panic that has influenced Canadian public policy during the pandemic, questioning why policymakers continue to promote fear and whether the national response to Covid has been excessive.
