Do No Harm
This was an amazing case. My heart went out to both families and as I listened I even had tears in my eyes. You lost me however when you turned it into a racist thing. It wasn’t. Throughout the whole story CPS treated both families wrongly in the same way. It was disgusting what all four parents had to go through. They truly suffered. The Bright parents did not suffer less than the Butler’s though. The white parents didn’t get special treatment that made their ordeal any easier. The black family did not suffer more. With the Bright family there was a question where they did not know who specifically could have caused the abuse on Mason and that was the only reason they were not able to arrest one of the parents so they just removed both the children from the home which was wrong. That question of who may have cause other older injuries was clearly mentioned in the story. In the case of the Butler family the father was holding his child and admitted to dropping him accidentally and he was the person who was blamed for abuse - also wrong. How was the Bright family better off when both parents were suspected of abuse while Mrs. Butler wasn’t suspected of abusing her son. If their cases were so similar except for their skin colour and the outcomes in the end were the same (ie: they all got their kids back) then there was no racism that occurred in the entire story of the Butlers. It’s funny how no racism was ever mentioned at all when the Bright family had their children taken from them by two black social workers. I don’t think there was racism in either case but if we are going there then it should be brought up. It’s just as good a reason to yell racism as there is in the Butler case. They acted like there was racism simply because the Bright family had gone to court for compensation and the press had gotten wind of their story. The Butler’s got their kids back because of what the Bright family and their lawyer did in court. Then the Butler’s lawyer brings up racism with no clear explanation as to why before they ever even go to court for compensation. There’s no doubt in my mind that they will be compensated for all they were put through. There is ENOUGH division in this country without hearing racism everywhere when it clearly isn’t there. This story is about two cases where CPS removed children from two homes that should never have been removed and the parents were unjustly accused of abusing their children. Race never came into the story and had nothing to do with anything. Racism exists and it is UGLY. The word starts to lose its meaning when it is continuously used to describe situations that aren’t racist and it is an insult to victims of actual racism. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this podcast until the very end when you brought all that political crap into it where it didn’t belong. Please just tell true stories like this and don’t try to use it for political purposes. It’s just gross.

I find this podcast misleading. It uses dramatic music and vocal inflection to make this seem like a terribly controversial and suspenseful case. It demonizes the social workers whose jobs are on the line and are legally answerable for this (these) child(ren)’s wellbeing. I understand the...Read full review »

Wonderful story, has me on edge... there are way to many ads and promotions of other podcasts. I have to skip through so much. Please get right to the meat of this story.
