“A compelling piece of work on an important and fascinating time in early internet history. I was a loyal AICN daily reader, and watched its rise and fall in real time. This was usually well done and captivating to listen to, but it is marred by a bit too much moralizing and editorialization. Editorializing is crucial in a work like this, especially when covering the story arc of a very flawed individual like Harry. But there’s a bit too much hand-wringing and pearl-clutching that becomes too much to bear after a while. I’m not even talking about with Harry himself, but the narrator seems intent on moralizing about ‘90s and 2000s culture in general, branding everything some kind of -phobia or -ism, leveling subjective barbs cloaked as objective (Jerry Lewis is described casually as a “misogynist” with no explanation). Amusing soundbites are played, and then we’re preached to about how and why we shouldn’t find it funny anymore. It’s a bit off-putting on the whole, and detracts from the important work of documentation being done here. I will still recommend the podcast, as long as the listener can tolerate all the dour preachiness.”
