“As a retrospective of the rise and fall of AICN, there is a lot of good info here that I never knew, and the creator does a nice job of laying out the narrative. The problem is that his own obvious bias seeps in to such a degree that the podcast is relegated to a takedown hit piece in the mind of the listener, and therefore it’s hard to take it too seriously.
The most eye-rolling bit is the creator’s reverence for traditional, old-school film reviewers and the lamenting of their loss. Please. Has there ever been a more useless, destructive occupation than traditional newspaper film reviewer? Good riddance to this pack of unqualified snobs, in particular Pauline Kael, who’s nauseating snobbery would never allow her to judge a film for what it set out to accomplish. She and the Vincent Canbys and Gene Siskels of the word were among the most destructive forces ever unleashed on cinema. Give me the pseudo-democracy of Rotten Tomatoes any day over that pack of self-righteous hacks.
Oh, and the smaller, more personal, non-genre films didn’t disappear, they moved to television, where the writer is in charge and can have the freedom to be daring and take risks without so much interference.”
