Haunting Fashion: Clothing Beyond the Grave
Listen now
Description
Our annual Halloween show is the highlight of the DRESS:FANCY year. Host Lucy Clayton is joined by writers Rosalind Yana and Chris Woodyard to explore the perplexing human impulse to imbue clothes with meaning beyond the grave. Can a garment embody a spirit? And how can what someone wore serve as a tool to process the concept of death? Inspired by all the drama and controversy of Kim Kardashian in Marilyn’s dress for the MET we investigate why the clothing of the dead has, throughout history, proved an evocative link to the afterlife. We consider the modern iterations of Mourning Jewellery alongside ancient memorial customs, and Lucy really tightens up plans for her own, lavish funeral.
