Widens my horizon
Podcast is often picking up on recent developments but sometimes also quite niche topics (such as the evolution of fast food culture in China) but then puts it into a broad perspective of societal and political change. I’m often surprised about how interesting I find an episode when I initially thought from the title it wouldn’t be my cup of tea. Drum tower deepens my understanding of Chinese society, politics and culture in a balanced way that demonises no one while remaining critical and in-depth. Compared to other foreign affairs podcasts, I there’s less “black and white / good vs bad” thinking, perhaps due to the British viewpoint which is less antagonistic than many Americans. Plus, the host start charming! They actually live in China, speak Chinese languages, raise families there and bring a deep background knowledge. Paying for an Economist podcast subscription paid off way more than I thought. Keep up the great work!

Thoughtful, intelligent journalism. Very perceptive and astute about what is happening in China, and how the international message is being spun to portray China in a better light.

Somehow this podcast fees less engaging than another country-focused podcast form The Economist, Checks and Balance.

Just listened to your excellent episode on Panzhihua and the Third Front. It blew my mind, as just about everything I heard was new to me. As with your other episodes, they provide a good window into today's China, with just enough historical context. Thank you from Perth, Western Australia!Read full review »
