Description
Julie Mehretu is born in Ethiopia in 1970, at Addis Abeba, where she spends her early childhood. Due to political instability in the country, she’s forced to leave for the USA with her family. The eighties are a period of growth, while during the digital revolution of the nineties she apprentices as a painter. Mehretu finally establishes herself in the new millennium, with a powerful iconic style, several influences and sources of inspiration - from architecture to the great historic events of our time. Throughout her career, she’s never alone, but collaborates with a group of friends and artists - those of the community of Denniston Hill. We’ll hear Mehretu tell us her story herself, and also listen to Francesca Sibàni (editor of Africa for the Italian weekly Internazionale) and the artist Paul Pfeiffer.
