Listen now
Description
Today’s pod is with a super-talented I’ve known in the industry for some time. Nathan’s career has been primarily in moving images but now he has turned his attention to capturing stills, particularly using the medium of film. He now specialises in capturing weddings on film, through his new business Analog Modern and has worked up a personal collection of stunning shots in his personal work. We chat about making the switch from moving to still images and the challenges that come with working with film.  Get to know Nathan Kaso  Based in Melbourne, Nathan has been working in video production for over 10 years. Creating unique wedding videos and some work in the commercial space too. Throughout these years of honing his craft, Nathan grew an affinity with photography - always going the extra mile when capturing images of his family. After seeing a gap in the market for a still-image film specialist, he took the plunge even developing his black and white negatives at home. Since launching this new arm to the business, Nathan has gone from strength to strength, really securing himself an artistic style and reputation.  What we cover in this episode  Nathan’s career as a film-maker  Making the switch to put more energy into photography Bringing nostalgia and that ‘family photo’ quality to his work  Seeing opportunities in the industry and taking them  Challenging light situations and film photography  How developing his film has been essential to learning about the medium  The secret to balancing colour and light with film  His core camera kit for weddings  The power of shooting in different formats  Nathan’s solo trip to the US and sparking creativity  His creative influences  How the pictures of the mundane things can turn into time capsule moments  Focusing on quality not quantity when it comes to images  Moving away from defaults and taking advantage of photo opportunities My biggest takeaway  It was so great to catch up with Nathan. All of his insights and expert knowledge bites about film photography were awesome. But, my biggest takeaway would be from the tail end of our conversation talking about photos not just being for ‘right now. With photos being captured so easily and uploaded to Instagram for that instant gratification it can be difficult to value an individual image. That’s why it’s so important for every photographer to really focus on creating images that will stand the test of time - helping to teach clients that quality always trumps quantity.  Links mentioned in the show  Nathan’s personal work: https://www.nathankaso.com/  Nathan’s wedding video website: www.nathankasoweddings.com  Analog Modern website: https://www.analog-modern.com/  Analog Modern Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/analog_modern/ Nathan’s personal work Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thisisnot_nathankaso/
