It’s about time!
I’ve been listening to WQXR since I was 10 years old but didn’t see Magic Flute until my 20’s in Barcelona and I was so shocked. The Met production with its posters everywhere during the holidays made it seem like a kids show! Imagine my shock and the entire audience was sanguine and laughing on cue in Spain. After that experience I searched for some kind of dissertation or book on this topic and came back with nothing. Thank you for finally addressing this. The other operas discussed are also very profound to me. I grew up listening to music from Aida and this was so eye opening. Thank you for bringing opera to modernity.

This is such an important, necessary, brilliant conversation. I would recommend it for anyone, especially those of us in the opera world.
