Promotes dangerous ideas under the guise of medicine and science
I became a fan of Roseanne after purchasing her book and began listening to her podcast. Overall, I like the idea of taking responsibility for your mindset, and I tend not to mind leaning into the “woo-woo” a little bit. But lately, I’ve been really disappointed with her messaging, although it’s not really about the fertility piece. It has to do with the fact that she seems to be casting doubt on the reality of the pandemic, saying that mask-wearing and lockdowns were “nonsense.” She has also recently hosted at least two different medical doctors (that I’ve listened to) who both spoke negatively about vaccines, one even saying that there is “evidence” the vaccines will cause infertility, which there is not (Dr. Christiane Northrop). In a more recent episode, she hosts a male doctor/statistician who quotes statistical numbers in such a way as to suggest that the vaccines are not, in fact, effective. That doctor says that when we hear numbers cited, we should question the motives of the person citing them and ask whether they might be using the numbers to present a certain kind of message. I think we should apply the same logic to that doctor himself. If anyone needs to know if COVID vaccines are safe and effective, the proof is in the pudding, so to speak. That pudding is the fact that outbreaks of the virus are being driven by unvaccinated communities. Breakthrough infections in vaccinated people are rare and overall much milder than the increasingly deadly cases we are seeing in unvaccinated people. And the only reason those infections are increasing is that more unvaccinated people means more opportunity for the virus to mutate and become vaccine-resistant. The vaccines have even been shown to be safe during pregnancy, according to recent data. Suggesting or implying that vaccines are ineffective or even dangerous is fear-mongering, which, as far as I’m concerned, fear is exactly not the kind of emotion women should want or need if they are seeking to have a positive “mindset” for fertility. And in that light, I feel this anti-vaccine messaging actually really goes against the grain of her overall message that she purports to want to convey to her audience. It makes me wonder what else is she fudging on? What other unconfirmed, half-baked or manipulated ideas is she using other professionals with degrees to expound on for her? I want to say that everyone is welcome to their own opinion. But when that person has a platform and that opinion could put her listeners, their family and community members at risk of losing their lives by avoiding life-saving measures, which is essentially what is prolonging this pandemic for all of us, well, I just cannot support that person’s opinion or her ideas. I hope that you, too, will think critically about what you hear on this podcast. Be sure to take it with a big grain of salt, do your own research, make up your own mind, and ultimately, do what is best for you and your family.
