“While a lot of film podcasts review and mock bad movies, and others specialize in pondering classy films, these guys basically review fun movies.
There’s an epic (in length and style) intro, followed by a general discussion and then they finish by summing up their overall judgements. Plus, they veer off topic all the time. In a good way!
The only issue, and the reason I took off a star, is one of the hosts is a real downer. I won’t say who, but it rhymes with Candy Bored-hen. He’s not a bad critic or host, and it’s good to have a different opinion on the show, but this host can really derail a fun conversation with petty nitpicking. I’ve been listening since Time Bandits episode from 2011, and it’s not a recent thing. The most egregious example is in the episode for the movie Equilibrium. There are only 3 hosts for the 75% of the episode, and they are all having a great time praising that dumb, but awesome film. Then right near the end, Captain Bringdown swoops in late and sinks the fun with boring nitpicks. Like we all don’t know that movie doesn’t hold up to careful analysis.
It’s like a bunch of enthusiastic nerdy kids holding a Star Wars fan club in their basement, but then the dad walks through to get a screwdriver and goes “Star Wars? Bunch of space dogs and lipstick swords and you know, there’s no sound in outer space”.
His positive opinions are insane, too. He thought Sofia Vergara in Modern Family is one of the “all time great comedic performances”. She’s fine, but that’s an odd over assessment and I needed a quick example of his positive opinions.
I’ve never felt compelled to say anything about him before, but after listening for almost a decade, then hearing him put down Gremlins 2 because a lot of the food the gremlins were eating would have water content.... like what are you doing? It’s a cartoon of a film, and we all know the rules are insane. Why always feel the need to treat goofy entertainment as serious art criticism?
Phew. Thanks for letting me rant on that. I really do love the show, and I listen to the Die Hard episode every Christmas!”
