“My favourite film is Ariel by Aki Kaurismäki. The set up and pay off for the car roof gag is one of the greatest things in cinema. But I wanted to say about Kes. I am from a mining town in South Yorkshire, not far and spiritually the same sort of place as Kes is set, just my secondary school life was 15 years later with more Thatcher. My partner is from Finland and not long after we started seeing each other about 20 years ago, I played her my dvd of Kes. When it finished, I noticed that she was crying and when we talked about it a bit, it was because she thought that had been a realistic representation of my childhood.”
