Essential Listening If You Love Coffee
I typically listen on Spotify but I came here specifically to leave this review. This podcast has completely blown all my expectations out of the water, has increased my knowledge of coffee in general and has even helped me improve the quality of my cups. I stumbled upon this when I first started getting into coffee as I was looking for some knowledge on how to brew better. At the beginning, these documentaries did not seem to fit what I was looking for. However, James’ mastery of storytelling sucked me in from the get go. I realised in short order that there are many sources for knowledge on brewing parameters, but many of the stories that James tells don’t come from anywhere else. This has greatly increased the colour of the coffee industry and has turned it from a cold monolith into something that is now warm and close to me, giving me a deeper understanding of the plight of the common coffee farmer. This has also led me to find better coffee through me building relationships with my local coffee roasters, and emphasising my commitment to sustainable and traceable coffee with my coffee dollars. James also covers the science of coffee, which is extremely interesting to a geek like me. I was struggling with a dark roasted Thai coffee. I consistently got dark, bitter and acrid notes. The main advice I got was to grind coarser, brew cooler, none of which worked. Going through the science of extraction, and how others achieved a sweeter cup, I fixed my issue using a 10% post brew dilution ratio. As I sip my coffee now, I taste dark chocolate and red berries. This podcast has now become a treasured part of my daily podcast consumption. I find that I have a deeper insight into the specialty coffee market, and this has led to my much deeper enjoyment of my daily coffees as well. Thanks James, you’re an absolute champion. Tl;dr Great information and engaging stories giving colour into specialty coffee industry, covering a wide variety of topics. Never feels dull or draggy, extremely interesting with excellent storytelling. If you are looking for a coffee podcast to grow your love and knowledge, definitely give this a try.
