“No other TTRPG podcast develops setting, theme, character and narrative with as much art and consideration as Friends at the Table. Each serious and light moment is given space to breathe, dramatic irony is everywhere, no character is too precious to leave unchanged and the series has some of the funniest character moments I’ve enjoyed in any media.
The players are collaborative and engaging. The usual GM, luminary Austin Walker, is remarkable at building worlds and deftly winding the threads around the player characters.
The games they use to explore the worlds are well chosen, varied and shape play.
The stories told are built on a tablewide foundation of critical analysis, genre knowledge, politics, culture, imagination and curiosity.
My recommended starting points:
- America’s Playground; playful 1890s pier-side arcade. Coen brothersadjacent game of the game Mall Kids.
- Road to Partizan 05: Echo Game; children play in the junk a past conflict, the ending makes me cry
- Partizan; If you want to jump straight into a sci-fi rebel story
Long Time, First Time - Liv”
