“It’s an entertaining show, but I wish they would have more BIPOC guests. It seems that the show (helmed by Headgum, which can also feel pretty white and cishet at times) is slipping into ~homonormativity,~ which has roots in making whiteness and white supremacy (insidious or not, in nature) the default.
As an example (not keeping a 1 to 1, down in the weeds score), for every 3-5 white guests, there’s 1 POC guest, who is usually a cis man.
Their episode with Trixie Mattel, who discussed getting to a point in her life where she was looking more deeply into what it means to be a passing Indigenous person (and largely escaping discrimination his mom, who has browner skin, was unable to, and the way system oppression works through and ruins small communities in small towns) (vs her previously claiming the label of a ‘boring white gay guy), very interesting and enjoyable.
On the flip side, hearing Kathleen Hanna discuss her bisexuality in a derogatory manner, through the lens of her ending up marrying a straight cis man, boring. Hearing Chani Nicholas misgender Fran Tirado on her bloated 2 episode appearances, also boring.
Homonormativity has a way of pushing BIPOC and trans people further and further away, whether people who can be the face of cultural moments in time (musicians, ~*influencers*~ etc.) mean to or not. It just gets stale, and is disheartening.
Please switch it up! Love hearing about whatever MUNA feels up to sharing with fans in their personal or professional lives, just don’t always ~vibe~ with the company they keep or feel they should amplify, presumably to bump listener numbers¿”
