A good story, told in a mediocre way.
I found this to be an interesting story without a lot of substance. The first episode is all spoilers, and it jumps in and out of the telling the story, and the selling of the story over and over again. The second episode starts with a LONG recap of the same. I was just about to stop listening when the reporting finally began. There is some interesting information about the farming industry, and profiles of the honest, hard-working neighbors of the Easterdays. It seems like the Easterday family at large may also be those same kind of people (I don’t think we get to hear from any of them except Cody’s (ex?)wife — it’s not clear if she spoke with Anna King or if King is just reading from statements she made or ???). Anyways, unfortunately the risk-taking, entrepreneurial ‘genius’ lead of the family seems to have gotten in over his head with a gambling addiction … the reporter seems to want to hint at a more nefarious truth. I think it’s pretty straightforward that to be someone who can take the necessary risks to grow a company from a few million to a quarter billion, you are probably also at higher risk for some sort of addiction(s) or lawbreaking. For me, the reporting wobbles being serious (Anna King’s Dateline delivery) and somewhat goofy (Anna King’s Dateline delivery so many bad puns). I think it would be better if it wasn’t trying so hard to sound like SERIAL, and possibly had a better outline. Even so, as a Washingtonian that grew up in Kennewick, I will probably stick with it.

This podcast is a tale or a yarn, depending on where you’re from that’s grounded in solid research and relationship building. A pretty darn good blend of solid reporting an artful storytelling. Give it a listen. This New York girl with a Pennsylvania and Texas rural heart found it captivating.

Listened on a whim and glad I did. Very good telling of a true story. I couldn’t be happier for who won the bid (no spoilers) but the winner will be a good steward of the land and the business aspect. Very sorry for all the family is going through.

I look forward to hearing this. I grew up on a small farm in Eastern Oregon and am continually appalled but the state of (industrial) farming and ranching.
