Deeper than Author Realizes
I’m not sure if it’s just the “Britishness” or the highly skeptical “Journalist” mentality that has the creator of this podcast so extremely hung up and actually angered over the aspect of the paranormal being the starter for this extremely personal investigation but it was the one detrimental factor running through the show. It’s probably more to do with some deeper fear of not being able to ever get “proof” in the way journalists are supposed to do but I kept hoping that he would eventually stop using this amazing aspect to the story as a punch line whenever it came up even though it absolutely was tying things together in ways that would lead to the next discovery. But that’s just my opinion. I also found it interesting how the in-laws resisted the idea that the fantastical myth of one ancestor may not have been true, even though the alternative was equally as interesting if not as heroic or self serving. The children seemed to be the ones who not only immediately understood the concept behind their family drama but were clearly impressed by the discovery of a new, equally as impressive and unique ancestor in their great-great grandmother. I think this kind of research by an outsider illuminates the character of the larger family and how they all began to band together against any negative possibilities while also creating some dark ulterior motives makes me wonder how much longer he will be in this relationship. He immediately becomes a suspicious outsider who has ill intentions and even his own wife shows signs of taking her family’s side. Even she questions his motives to the point that he starts questioning himself in a manner akin to self gaslighting. It’s uncomfortable to listen to at times because from a distance one can feel him becoming an ex. It’s an excellent podcast that tells one story but also shows us another. I hope the backlash from this podcast is short lived and the family can adjust to the new information they have learned about their past. It would be interesting to know what happened in a follow up at some point. Also, what about the second wife? Does no one care about her? In fact the choice to drop her entirely seems to me like a huge hole in this story. So who was she and was her medical condition actually what caused her death? If so why did the entire family get a different story? This bothers me like so much else. For example, did he also have a nice life insurance policy for her? After he benefited from her father dying? He didn’t make the money, he needed income. It’s all so convenient and neatly glossed over. I’m still not convinced that this person wasn’t responsible for the death of four people. I don’t care one way or the other but there is just so much smoke!

Honestly, I love a good ghost story and I find the skepticism so true to my own feelings. I do and don’t believe at the same time because it can feel so compelling. Worth a listen for sure.

This is like the upper middle class version of uncanny podcast (IMHO) it’s good and so I will listen to all of it no doubt but the tone and style is almost identical to Danny Robbins - spooky but I know what I saw (or in this case heard) 👻

I really enjoyed this podcast, it is well made and narrated. I found it a bit frustrating that the family were unwilling to face uncomfortable truths, even if it meant brushing over a potentially terrible injustice to family members Naomi and Morris. They can’t see what appears to be staring them...Read full review »
