“I loved this podcast. Not because of the criminal aspect of who-dunnit but more because I’ve been obsessed with with my own genealogy for quite sometime now.
What let’s down the podcast, as many have already noted, are the descendants of Naomi Dancy. The sheer biases they have are truly shocking. Instead of revelling in the new information that has come to light, they find themselves annoyed to find out the truth that their “great and exceptional” male ancestor had a habit of lying! Does the actual true star of the family, Naomi Dancy, gets a reexamination and acknowledgment of her brilliance? Oh no, the family blame the research and refuse to examine their own sexist biases. I can’t really blame the lead journalist for wanting to then keep the peace for his own family’s sake, but boy, is it grating.
So I’ll end this with a little personal note to the family - embrace the facts that are in front of you. If you ever take the time to examine your family tree in depth through research, you will likely find that many family myths are made up or exaggerated, that there are many scandals and half-truths, cover-ups, bizarre facts. It doesn’t mean that you now should be ashamed, rather the opposite - it gives you the opportunity to understand your ancestors, to acknowledge that people are complicated. And likewise, whether John Dancy was the murder may not be the most important part. What’s important is that you now know he was a colourful person who, through exaggeration, led many to believe he was the star of the family. Isn’t that amazing in itself? And does it not give you the chance to every your eyes to the amazing doctor in your ancestry and find out more, give her achievements justice? Like, come on!”
