I saw a tweet the other day, from one of those annoying self-improvement accounts that advises people to start waking up at 5 am, that said you should stop listening to music and use that time instead to listen to podcasts. Firstly, that’s a terrible idea, I am not advocating for that at all. Going Deep with Chad & JT is the antithesis of that tweet. While it is a weekly podcast, it possesses none of the arrogance or hubris that can come with the space (Chad calls himself Chad Kroeger after the Nickelback frontman, even though his real name is Tim). And while a central part of each episode is offering advice to listener questions, Chad and JT approach every situation with candor, honesty and optimism. At a surface level the podcast can seem like a bro-down at a Val Surf. Both hosts are white dudes that grew up in Orange County, fans of the show are referred to as “stokers”, and the tagline of the show is “Southern California’s Most Popular Podcast”. Beyond all that is a goofy sense of humor and unflinching honesty about their past struggles or mishaps--a recent anecdote was about how JT used to lie to people about having a job so it would make him more motivated to get one-- as well as an extremely in-depth knowledge of pop culture specifically from 1990-2005. The authenticity and accessibility of the podcast are perhaps what makes it so dang fun to listen to, you never feel out of your element, or like the hosts are talking down on you, instead they are welcoming you in with open arms, inviting you to get stoked on life. Listening to Chad & JT is one of the highlights of my week, and never fails to put me in a good mood. Without a doubt, 5 stars.”
