Excellent, except...
Excellent coverage of the Ashes as ever, except there’re too many of Dirk Nannes’ stories, some of which went for many overs. Stories are great as long as they illustrate certain aspects and qualities of test cricket. They should be concise and not be taken up too much of the commentary. I think the expert commentaries are best as insiders’ comments on something not easily seen by untrained eyes. Chris Rogers does this well. Test cricket is boring, we all know that, but we love it and we want to know about cricket in microscopic details, without which we would miss a lot of cricket. The star of the ABC commentary team is Alison Mitchell who describes the field actions so vividly we can see imageries from listening to the radio. Whist she brings wit and intelligence to the commentary, she has to politely join in with Dirk’s rambling stories. If those stories were told more succinctly, we could hear more of Alison too. I’m sure she has a lot to say about cricket through her experience with the BBC. Although we can choose to listen to various coverage including the BBC, I want the ABC Grandstand to be the best as it has been a part of our Australian summer for a long time. We all love hanging around in the shed or kitchen listening to the cricket on the radio. All the best.

They’re good, if you can find them. Sometimes they’re there; sometimes they’re not. It seems that the ABC can’t organise a consistent podcast.
