Description
In the first season of Hazard, listeners will follow host Amy Roost, a journalist and mother, in her quest for answers to her three children’s brain malformations. Roost will tell the story of the pesticide chlorpyrifos, once a common ingredient in household flea bombs, that federal regulators later discovered was toxic to fetuses and young children. The chemical was pulled from commercial products, but thanks to a fatal flaw in the U.S. approach to chemicals regulation, Dow Chemical struck a deal that kept chlorpyrifos in use in industrial agriculture. Activists have worked tirelessly to get chlorpyrifos banned in some fields, but today it's still used on more than 800,000 acres and 60 crops in California alone, exposing thousands of farmworkers and their families to a known neurotoxin.
