Vasa Previa Episode
I loved the vasa previa episode! It was very thorough and clear. I’m glad Dr. Rebarber mentioned that many are treating vasa previa as being fetal vessels within 5cm of the cervix. This is so important as we have lost multiple babies from doctors telling patients they were cleared at 2cm. Other points I would have emphasized: (1) Types 2 and 3 are eligible for fetoscopic surgery to laser ablate the vasa previa and eliminate the risk of fetal exsanguination and the need for hospitalization and automatic preterm delivery via C-section, (2) there is an amazing vasa previa patient private Facebook group that helps VP moms advocate for proper care, (3) the decision when to admit and have the C-section is a risk/benefit analysis that only the patient can make considering the doctor’s advice, and (4) some women are told their VP has resolved when it has not because the baby is covering the cervix and hiding the vessel. It’s the patient’s baby who is at risk of bleeding to death.
