This week Jerry Katzman M.D. interviews Stanley B Burns M.D. FACS one of the world's authorities on the history of medicine and the procurer of the Burns Collection and Archive consisting of over 1 Million authentic, original and iconic historical photographs that visually document forgotten,unseen,and at times disturbing aspects of medicine, society and life. Dr Burns began his passion of collecting artifacts( i.e stamps, coins, etc) as a child. His interest in history led to and culminated in the development of the Burns Collection in 1975 and the Burns Archive in 1977. The Archive is broken down into historical and medical categories which are further subdivided into areas as follows; on the historical side - war and conflict, people and places, crime and punishment,social and cultural history,African American, death and memorial, occupational history and Judaica, to name a few. On the medical side subdivided  topics include - Pioneers and Innovators, Therapy and Treatment, Operative Scenes,Disease and Pathology, Medical Specialties, Interesting Medical Cases and Curiosity, Hospitals and Wards, Nursing,Alternative Practitioners,Anatomy and Education, Medicine in War,Disease and Pathology, and Doctors offices and Laboratories. The collection is considered one of the top 100 private collections in America. In sharing his treasures Dr.Burns has published as part of his cornerstone work as a medical photographic historian over 1,000 articles in medical journals documenting the history of medicine. He has also authored over 44 photo historical texts.  His works have been seen on countless shows and documentaries including NBC, CBS,PBS, History Channel, and Masterpiece theatre.  His photographs  have been exhibited in major museums throughout the world and over the past 40 years he has contributed to thousands of feature films, documentaries and publications. Dr Burns an Ophthalmolgist by training still sees patients "in his spare time" one day a week, and is the on-set Medical, Historical, and Technical consultant for the HBO-Cinemax series "The Knick". A historical melodrama depicting the vivid evolution of medicine through interesting medical stories many based on work he has written.
