Episode 111: Jake "The Snake" Roberts
Listen now
Description
"Jake the Snake" Roberts was a wrestling legend, famous for his trademark bag of snakes and intimidating on-screen persona. But behind the glitz and glamour of his in-ring performances lay a dark and troubled reality. Jake's addiction was a result of a traumatic childhood. His father was not only physically abusive, but he also sexually abused Jake's sister and had a history of pedophilia that included Jake's mother, who was only 13 years old when she gave birth to him. In a desperate attempt to numb his pain, Jake turned to drugs and alcohol, leading him down a path of self-destruction. Despite being a star of the 1980s wrestling scene, Jake's addiction was spiraling out of control. He would show up to matches drunk or high and even disappear for days at a time. It wasn't until he hit rock bottom that he realized he needed to make a change. Jake eventually committed to getting clean, with rehab and turning to a higher power for support. He also found solace in DDP Yoga, which helped him heal his mind, body, and spirit. After over a decade of sobriety, Jake is now an advocate for addiction recovery and mental health awareness, sharing his story to inspire and help others facing similar challenges. Jake's journey is a testament to the power of resilience and hope in overcoming adversity. Despite facing unimaginable trauma and struggling with addiction and mental health issues, he was able to turn his life around and find a sense of purpose. Jake's story is a reminder of the importance of support and understanding for those battling addiction and mental health issues, and the power of the human spirit to overcome even the darkest of circumstances.
