“Wow, having just listened to the first episode, if the rest of the episodes reach this level of insight and detail then this podcast could be great. As is usually the case when two overeducated people, who by the sounds of it don’t have much actual experience playing football, talk about the game, there is a tendency to over-intellectualise things and a slightnaivety, taking things players say about their own game as gospel. Given Simon lives in Paris and has interviewed Mbappe, and the weird fact that Mehreen’s favourite national team is France, you sense the details and sheer enthusiasm in this episode might not be matched in others. It was a bit hagiographic at times, believing some of Mbappe’s more dubious comments about his own genius, as well as comments about his apparently beautiful gliding running style (he’s powerful and quite rigid with his straight left arm), or saying he’s the best spoken footballer of any country and language when so many polished young players are springing up everywhere nowadays (Bellingham, Endrick to name a few). The lack of knowledge about Brazil could prove a problem. The whole episode virtually made the case for why Paris has the best football infrastructure in the world, providing plenty of opportunity and resources to talented youth. The hosts think this means France has the most raw talent in the world. The numbers show that Brazil exports the most professional footballers and anyone who’s spent an ounce of time playing in Brazil realises that raw talent is more present there than anywhere else. They also site Pele without realising that he was often ridiculed in Brazil for voicing ridiculous and contradictory opinions”
